Trev had always known he wasn’t quite like other teenagers so wasn’t too surprised when the orphanage sent him to board at The School for the Embarrassingly Different.

“Here’s your crayons,” said the headmaster on Trev’s first day. “Now go and sit over there quietly.”

Trev found himself next to a girl with facial piercings who was crayoning in a picture of a skull.

She smiled at him. “I’m Lily. I just got here today too. What are you in for?”

Trev hesitated. The orphanage was right. It was kind of embarrassing. “I have an alter ego... He’s a superhero.”

“How cool!” said Lily.

Trev smiled a little. “Why are you here?”

Lily shrugged. “Serial killer at my last school. Her family was better off, so the headmistress asked if I’d do the decent thing and take the blame.” She looked away. “There’s something else as well but…”

The Goth thing Trev guessed but he could see Lily didn’t want to talk about it. He opened up his crayons and selected a picture of a bunny.

“Hey. New kids!”

Trev and Lily looked under the table to find a girl looking up at them.

“Midnight. The basement,” she said. And crawled rapidly away.

Trev and Lily exchanged glances.

Just before midnight Trev woke up in his dormitory. He tried to get dressed as quietly as possible but he heard one of the other boys stirring and his heart sank.

“It’s OK,” whispered the other boy. “It’s my turn to attend too.”

He gestured to Trev and led the way down to the basement.

When they arrived, Lily and the other girl were already there.

“Come in!” said the girl. She grinned at Trev. “I’m Anita, and that’s Jack.”

“Look, Trev!” Lily pointed at a table piled high with textbooks.

“We found them abandoned here,” said Jack. “Now we all take it in turns to come down at night to study.”

“We have to be careful,” said Anita. “We don’t want the teachers to catch us.”

There was a sudden bang and Anita’s eyes widened. “Hide!”

Jack, Lily and Trev scrambled under the table. They waited holding their breath but nobody came.

Jack crawled out again. “False alarm.”

Trev and Lily followed him and they all stood up.

“Where’s Anita?” said Lily, looking around.

A chair stretched and straightened, and suddenly Anita was standing there.

“Oh, my goodness,” said Lily. “I wish I could do that!”

Anita smiled and shrugged. “It’s nothing special. I can only change into furniture.”

She gestured at Jack. “He’s a fruit.”

“What..?” said Lily.

Jack began rapidly shrinking and changing colour until a large dark pink fruit lay on the floor.

“A dragon fruit!” Lily reached and picked it up. “Oh, it’s beautiful…” Her eyebrows rose as she realised what she was doing. “I’m so sorry.” She put the dragon fruit back down on the floor and it changed back into a giggling Jack.

“It’s OK,” he said. “Not many people think my other body is attractive. Not even my family, and lots of them are fruit and vegetables.”

“This is brilliant!” said Trev. “With my superhero alter ego, we could be a crime fighting team. Well, apart from Lily of course, because…” Trev stopped, wishing he’d never started talking.

But Lily just shrugged. “Perhaps I can be the intelligent one who gets you all out of trouble.”

“Sounds good to me,” laughed Anita.

It happened a couple of months later.

Jack came to find Trev and Lily. “It’s my cousin, Roger! He’s become an evil mastermind calling himself Carnivorous Carrot! We’ve got to stop him.”

And he dashed off, Trev and Lily hard on his heels.

They found Anita waiting at the gate, and the four of them began running into town. Trev ripped off his school uniform as he went—underneath was the blue uniform of his superhero alter ego.

They reached the town centre and pushed through hordes of screaming people until they saw the Carnivorous Carrot holding a terrified woman hostage.

“Let her go!” yelled Jack.

“No!” sneered the Carrot. “I need a snack before I put my evil schemes into operation.”

Anita sprang forward, changed into a tallboy and toppled onto the Carrot. But he merely pushed her aside.

The superhero rushed towards the Carrot and yanked off one of his arms. The Carrot held his hostage tightly with the other and swung her to knock the superhero over.

“That’s enough, Roger!” cried Jack.

“Don’t come any closer or you’ll be getting chomped too.” The Carrot opened his mouth wide and aimed at the woman’s neck.

“Well, I think you’d find me indigestible. After all, you are a Carnivorous Carrot.” Jack launched himself at the Carrot, turning himself into the dragon fruit. He hit the Carrot’s mouth and taken by surprise, the Carrot swallowed him. He started to choke and let the woman slump to the floor.

“Jack!” Lily watched the scene in desperation. “This is no time to be embarrassed,” she muttered.

And she transformed.

Groggily, the superhero stood up. There in front of him was a woodchipper. For a moment he stared at it.

Then he grinned.

He swung the arm he’d ripped from the Carrot and with a gurgle the vegetable toppled into the woodchipper. There was a horrible juddering, and then it was all over.

The police officer came over to where Lily, Trev and Anita were being checked over by the paramedics.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “We went through the remains of the Carrot and we found the dragon fruit but…”

Anita and Trev were crying. Lily turned to them. “Death comes to us all. He died a hero.”

“You’re all heroes,” said the police officer.

“Yes. We are,” said Trev. “And this is just the beginning.” He wiped his eyes. “ In Jack’s memory, we’ll be the Dragon Fruit Four. Are you with me?”

There was a pause and Anita and Lily nodded.

Trev gave a determined smile. “So, let’s find more evil to fight.”
999 words. (I'm just glad it's finished. I cannot now remember a time when I wasn't writing this story ^^")

Written for Flash Fiction Month 2015: Day 11.

Today's Challenge: Your challenge today is to go through the entries for July 7th, 2015 and write a response to an entry from that day.  Naturally, you can't run at this all willy-nilly, and there's always a catch, so here are your guidelines:

Reboot
Bullet; Blue  Your fic should be a response to an entry from July 7th, but must use the challenge from a DIFFERENT entry on July 7th. (Neither of these should be your entry from that day, if you did it.)

Reuse
Bullet; Blue  Your entry must feature at least one character from each of the original flash fics.

Recycle
Bullet; Blue  In addition to the Object, Wordcount, Genre, Character, and Additional Elements from a different piece, your story must include at least one direct quote from that piece, but used in a different context.

Reboot: I wrote a response to The Accurate Tales of Sergeant Scrum by C-A-Harland (I suppose you could call my story an AU prequel or kidfic) and I used the challenge from An Enid Blyton Tribute by ThornyEnglishRose.

The challenge was:

Object: a dragon fruit
List A: 999 words
List B: school story
List C: quirky goth
List D: the discovery of a corpse

Reuse: I used Trev and the Carnivorous Carrot from The Accurate Tales of Sergeant Scrum and Lily from An Enid Blyton Tribute.

Recycle:  I used the quotation: 'Death comes to us all.'
