“I thought full stop didn’t feel like going because of her period,” whispered hyphen.
“Oh, no,” said semicolon, “that’s not full stop; that’s dot, one of the ellipsis sisters.”

Sicklefox
Once upon a time there was a naughty boy. He was about your age, if I’m not mistaken. This naughty boy loved to run and jump and play with his friends, but more than anything he loved sweet things. So when he spied the baker coming down the street with two trays of iced buns, he wasted no time in running over to him.
“Aren’t you afraid carrying all those buns?” asked the naughty little boy.
“Afraid?” asked the baker. “Of course not—why would I be?”

i as a thing with a body
must feel endlessly.
opening, blooming,
closing, wilting:
i flower
and the sky falls upon me.
i am the root, the stem, the rain.
when this bedrock allows
for no more following --
then i must lead,
if i wish to breathe.
i as a thing with a body
have no lungs to speak of
and must compensate
with twigs,
and pixels,
and distance without schematic
with falling, for a lilac while
and ending things before they begin.
when i am hurt
i must not be hurt.
i as a thing with a body
must never be hurt:
to be hurt is surely to die,
and to die is to be unknown.
to be unknown is to have roots
but no stem
no petal.

fabled life
i.
she talks through her wrinkles,
'i have no desire for food', she says.
i take her plate to the kitchen
noticing how the beetroot shavings bled into the skin of the chicken and brown rice.
it was blood, skin, and bone,
and the rice was a million starlike cells floating between.
this reminds me of my anatomy textbook:
we've been learning what's beneath our skin,
we learned that all cells divide. some cells often don't stop dividing.
other cells divide and stop when they should...
but not my grandmother's.
starlike, they explode, they shatter, they consume
they divide.
ii.
i want to be mad at my grandmother's cells,
but what would that do?
